LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The principal of Highland Middle announced Tuesday he is leaving the school to take another position with Jefferson County Public Schools.

In a letter emailed to parents, Steve Heckman says his last day at the school is today and that the search for his replacement will begin immediately.

"The decision was not an easy one, Highland has truly been a home for the past twelve years," he said. "It has sincerely been a privilege to lead so many dedicated staff members and to be trusted with the education of thousands of wonderful young people trying to discover who they are and their place in the world. I have truly been blessed to work with such a magnificent group of people."

Allison Martin, a district spokeswoman, told WDRB that Heckman will assume the role of assistant principal at the Phoenix School of Discovery.

Heckman said he's certain the Highland Middle School's site-based decision making council (SBDM) will hire a new principal that will work on achieving our Highland’s Vision that “Each Highland student will progress with the academic, social, and global skills needed to be successful in high school and beyond.”

He added: "I have loved each day at Highland and have always made every decision based on what I believed was in the best interest of students."

Classes resume on Aug. 10 for JCPS students.
