National Night Out brings police and communities together to build trust

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD Chief Steve Conrad says community events like National Night Out are crucial in building trust.

One women at the event in Wyandotte Park on Tuesday night hopes these events really do make her community safer.

"Every time we put on the news there's always violence somewhere so we just got to come together," Alicha Ezell said. "The violence needs to stop."

Ezell is fed up with a spike in crime in Louisville. She brought her kids to a National Night Out event Tuesday to give them a positive experience with police.

"I think it's very good for the kids to come out, have some fun (and) mingle with the cops," she said. "So let them know they're out here. Just to show them some love and support."

It's something Chief Conrad says is crucial, especially with tensions high across the country between communities and officers.

"The truth is the vast majority of people do support the men and women of the LMPD," he said. "This is an opportunity for us to reach out to everyone and a chance for people to see us in a situation where we're not writing a ticket, where we're not taking a report."

U.S. Attorney John Kuhn says the recent deadly shootings are concerning.

"There have been a lot of challenges lately," Kuhn said. "Everyone I know in law enforcement is working to rebuild trust with neighborhoods and communities, and so this is just one part of that effort."

And mothers like Ezell are noticing the effort.

"I think it is because you can see them make amends with the city," she said. "The city of Louisville has really changed over the years, so hopefully with this event and events in the future will lead to some changes."

Law enforcement held seven national night out events throughout the metro area Tuesday.
