Orange County, Ind. inmate captured hours after escaping jail
Investigators say Denny Kellems Jr. escaped from the jail sometime between 10 p.m. on Tuesday night and 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police say an inmate from the Orange County Jail was captured after he escaped from custody.
Ruby Copeland lives down the street from the facility.
"It makes me very, very anxious," she told WDRB News.
Investigators say Denny Kellems Jr. escaped from the jail sometime between 10 p.m. on Tuesday night and 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. We're told the 33-year-old was in in possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and that he's stayed at the jail several times.
"For him to know the facility would make it certainly easier for him to be able to get out," said ISP Sgt. Philip Hensley.
Authorities say following his escape, Kellems allegedly confronted a woman in Paoli and stole her vehicle after assaulting her at a gas station.
Members of the Paoli Police Department located the stolen vehicle in French Lick, Indiana. An officer located Kellems near the Edgewood Apartments in French Lick.
"Through their patrols of the area, they found Kellems<" Hensley explained. "Kellems began walking toward a Paoli officer and and at that point, began stabbing himself in the throat."
Officials say a senior trooper provided treatment to Kellems until EMS arrived. He was then taken to IU Health in Paoli for. Kellems is expected to survive, according to police.
Now investigators are trying to fill in the blanks about exactly what Kellems did while he was missing and how he escaped.
"We're gonna work together, figure out what happened and what caused the ability for him to get out and try to prevent it in the future," Hensley said.
Officials say charges against Kellems are pending. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
