LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Just as kids are getting ready for school in a few days, volunteers are getting the school ready for the kids.

Phillis Wheatley Elementary School in the California Neighborhood got a makeover Sunday morning.

Second division LMPD officers, teachers, and neighbors picked up trash and landscaped the school's entrance.

Councilman David James says they put in the effort so students can be proud of their school.

"If kids think that we care about them and that this is very important thing for us then they'll feel important and do better in school," James said.

Earlier in the day there was a back to school delivery.

Backpacks were filled with markers, pencils and other supplies.
