New Birth Church holds back to school event to help the community return to class

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A back to school bash going strong for the last five years.

New Birth Church gave out free school supplies, free hair cuts, and free dental exams Sunday.

The items were handed out to anyone who needed help before the first school bells ring.

Last year, the church helped more than 1,200 students get off to the right start.

"We do this to be a help to the community. We understand at this time of the year, some parents are really strapped trying to get their children ready for school so we do this as our way of trying to help and give back," Ebony Pryor, New Birth Church business administrator, said.

Students also had the chance to hang out with Shively officers and firefighters, and check out all the bells and whistles on the police cruisers and firetrucks.
