LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Metro Police say they have a suspect and a confession in a Friday murder.

According to a Louisville Metro Police Department uniform citation, 33-year old Michael Doertch confessed to the crime.

The victim was found in the back yard of a home on Taylor Blvd. on Friday morning.

"Yeah, he was my best friend," said Ricky Bartee.

Bartee lives in the home and discovered the victim's body.

He said, "Called 911, told him, 'my friend looked like he had been beaten real bad'" said Bartee

"When officers arrived, they did locate a white male in the rear of the yard, apparently suffering from some type of foul play," said Dwight Mitchell, with LMPD.

LMPD homicide detectives immediately started working the scene to determine what happened.

Mitchell said, "He received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene."

Police made an arrest within 24-hours and did not have to look far for the suspect. According to an LMPD citation, Doertch "admitted to assaulting the victim, causing his death."

Bartee said, "I was shocked, you know, he seemed like a cool guy, he didn't seem like he was a violent person."

Bartee said both the victim and suspect lived in the rear of his house.

Bartee said, "They slept back there together, he slept in one room and the guy who did it slept in the other room. I thought they were pretty cool back there together, they hung together a little bit."

Right now, Doertch is charged with murder but police have not released a motive.

"All I really want to say is my uncle was a good man," said Jonathan Garland, the victim's nephew.

Garland is one of a handful of people who showed up at the scene on Friday, he said his uncle had recently moved to the area from out of town.

"And like each and every one of us, he had his own problems -- but he was a good man," said Garland.

Neighbors and friends agree. That's why they have questions for the suspect.

Bartee said, "Yeah, I want to know why."

Right now, the coroner has not released the victim's identity.
