LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police are investigating after human remains were located in Henderson County.

According to a release from Kentucky State Police, the remains were located on Diamond Island in the Ohio River near Geneva, Kentucky. The area is about 37 miles west of Owensboro, Kentucky.

Police say a passing fisherman reported the findings to authorities on Tuesday at around 3:15 p.m.

Detectives and troopers with KSP went to the scene and confirmed that the remains were human.

State Police and the Henderson County Coroner's Office have not determined the person's identity, gender or a cause of death. Officials say they believe the body had been in the area longer than three years.

The remains have been taken to the Medical Examiner's office. Officials say it could take several weeks to make a positive identification.
