LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – High school football season has arrived, and WDRB has added another element to the discussion about the best teams in our Kentucky and Indiana viewing areas:

The WDRB Kentuckiana High School Football Top 10.

In addition to our television coverage throughout the week, highlighted by First Down Fridays and our online voting for Best Plays of the Week, we have added a weekly poll of the Top 10 teams in the area.

Our six-member sports team will vote every week. We’ll also include a guest voter. You can submit your ballot by email to rbozich@wdrb.com. As the season begins, we have included a ballot by MaxPreps, a national high school football and basketball website.

It’s an interesting challenge, because it combines teams of all classes and from both sides of the river in the WDRB coverage area.

Without delay, here is the first ranking for the 2016 season.

1. Trinity (5 first-place votes, 68 points) – After losing in the state quarterfinals to Male a year ago, the Shamrocks are motivated to return to the final weekend of the season and earn another Class 6A title. Discount Bob Beatty at your own risk.

2. Male (1 first-place vote, 62 points) – The Bulldogs lost many of the top players from last season’s 15-0 Class 6A champs, but a talented group of replacements have arrived at a program that won at every level last season.

3. St. Xavier (1 first-place vote, 58 points) – Coach Will Wolford has a quarterback (Desmond Ridder) who can navigate the Tigers through a challenging schedule.

4. Manual (35 points) – Former Butler coach Scott Carmony returns from a break from high school football to lead Manual.

5. DeSales (34 points) – The Colts are excited to show off their new home field against Fairdale Friday night.

6. Central (33 points) – Ty Scroggins always finds a way to keep the Yellow Jackets in the discussion, making Muhammad Ali proud of his alma mater.

7. Fern Creek (31 points) – Remember this name: Quarterback Shamar Bryant threw 19 touchdown passes last season.

8. Christian Academy (20 points) – Coach Stefan LeFors, the former Louisville quarterback, has two top sophomores – quarterback Austin Carr and receiver Milton Wright.

9. Pleasure Ridge Park (17 points) – David Kennison is a two-way star at running back and linebacker.

10. Central Hardin (7 points) – After making the state semifinals a year ago, the Bruins are counting on lineman Drew Goodman to stop the running game.
