Third Street to remain open through end of 2016, despite convention center expansion

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Third Street, between Market Street and Jefferson Street, will remain open through the end of 2016, according to a news release distributed by the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Tuesday afternoon.

Plans originally called for the street to close Wednesday, when the Kentucky International Convention Center expansion project gets underway, but those plans have changed.

"Hunt Construction, the general contractor, is revising plans to help mitigate downtown traffic congestion around the convention center," the news release states. "Additionally, LMPD will monitor traffic flow to determine when to increase traffic detail in the area."

Barriers and construction fencing will be erected around the building -- in the block bordered by Third and Fourth Streets between Market and Jefferson Streets -- in the coming weeks, according to the release.

The construction project is expected to expand exhibit hall and ballroom space in the same footprint.
