Free 'Officer Down' training hits mark in southern Kentucky

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- In law enforcement, you have listeners and leaders. Rodney Van Zant falls into the leader category.

"I've been in law enforcement for 16 years now," Van Zant said.

Nestled away in Rockcastle County, Van Zant started "Iron Sight Defense" in 2008. He has help running training classes on all 156 acres.

"Be nice to everyone you meet, but have a plan to kill 'em," says Iron Sight instructor Jason Back.

"This type of training is more special operations training, and it's not offered at the police academy," adds instructor Joshua Scott.

For ten hours on Saturday, Iron Sight Defense will host law enforcement from all over the state for a free training session. The team will train others for an "officer down" scenario.

"We are going to put officers in between the bad guy and downed officers or downed civilians or innocent civilians that may be in harms way," Van Zant said.

Trainers believe learning what they don't teach you in the police academy could be the difference between safety and being caught in the line of fire.

The free training is open to all members of law enforcement from any state, you can still sign up for Saturday's event by clicking here
