LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Officials in Monroe County have voted to close the local jail because it can't meet new state regulations that call for more staffing.

Police officers warn closing the jail could affect public safety. It's set to close at the end of the month.

Starting in September, inmates and new defendants will be sent to the Barren County jail in Glasgow --- that's about 40 minutes away. Monroe County will pay about $36 a day for each inmate -- which will end up saving the county money.
