Louisville Forward seeks input on plans for old Urban Government Center

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) –- Louisville Metro government has begun its planning process to redevelop the former Urban Government Center.

Louisville Forward hosted a public input meeting Monday to seek the public’s help in devising a plan for a 12-acre block at Barret Avenue and Breckinridge Street.

“It's very strategically-located near Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue,” said Gretchen Milliken, Director of Advanced Planning for Louisville Forward.

Back in 2012, mold and other problems were found throughout the building, and the city planned to shut it down. For the most part, that's happened, but the Jefferson County Coroner's office is still there.

Across the parking lot, the Louisville Metro Housing Authority remains, but it will soon move out as well.

The city estimates the entire value of the property is around $3 million. To fix the problems, the city says it could cost as much as $20 million.

“We do not have a plan for this property,” Milliken said. “That's exactly why we're here: to get ideas, to get people's input.

Suggestions given at the meeting were wide-ranging, but lots of people in attendance said they didn’t want any sort of high-rise building. It has not yet been determined whether the buildings will be torn down or renovated.

“Coffee shops, restaurants, things that people can walk to and get the community out and moving,” suggested Julie Rose, who lives just a few hundred yards from the property.

There will be another public input meeting at 810 Barret Avenue on Tuesday at 6 p.m. A third meeting will be held at the same location at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
