LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The world received its first view of Earth 50 years ago.

Lunar Orbiter One took the photo at right from the moon in Aug. 1966. It was one of five Lunar Orbiters to photograph the surface of the moon. The white spot in the background is the Earth.

Astronomers were looking for smooth areas for landing sites for the Surveyor and Apollo missions.

All five Orbiters sent back a total of 3,062 photos, showing 99 percent of the moon's surface.
