LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – One week into the season, one team has made a major move in the WDRB High School Football Top 10:

The Fern Creek Tigers.

Ranked seventh in the opening WDRB poll, Fern Creek moved past Central, DeSales and DuPont Manual to rank fourth in week two. The Tigers have an opportunity to confirm their status Friday when they visit Manual at 7:30 p.m.

“I think we can be just as good, if not better than last year,” Fern Creek coach Josh Abell said.

The Tigers finished 12-2 last season, advancing to the Class 5A state semifinals. They won their season opener at Seneca, 33-0.

Halfback Kyree Hawkins ran for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was also credited with seven tackles. Abell said that Hawkins, a 6-foot, 205-pound senior, has received interest from Eastern Kentucky and Ohio University.

“Kyree is one of two four-year starters on the team,” Abell said. “He provides a lot of leadership.”

Abell also praised the play of offensive lineman Raymond Wingate, who is 6-4 and 240 pounds.

“I really believe to have success with any team at this level, you really have to have a lot of solid play up front,” Abell said. “We’re playing some juniors who need more experience, but they’ve got the potential to be really good players.”
