Duke Energy to hike electricity rates by 2 percent

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Start saving now: Duke Energy is increasing electricity rates in Indiana by 2 percent, starting next month. That's nearly $2.00 more a month for the average customer.

State regulators approved the deal Thursday to help pay for a $3.5 billion plant that turns coal into gasoline near Edwardsport.

The decision ends more than five years of disputes over how to pay for the facility, which opened in 2013.

Duke Energy says rates could have spiked nearly 4 percent if a settlement had not been reached.
