LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Western Kentucky University football coach Jeff Brohm made his quarterback call on Friday afternoon, naming USF transfer Mike White the starter for next Thursday’s opener against Rice in Houchens-Smith Stadium.

White, a junior who redshirted last season after transferring, started 15 games in two seasons at USF.

“Mike has done a nice job preparing himself for this moment and operates our offense well,” Brohm said in a release sent by WKU. “All three of our veteran quarterbacks worked extremely hard and will be prepared if we call their number … But Mike will be our starter and I’m excited for his potential to lead our team.”

Senior Tyler Ferguson, a transfer from Louisville, and sophomore Drew Eckels also were in the hunt. Both could see action this season, but aren’t expected to play in the opener unless necessary.

WKU’s opener will kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday. It will air on the CBS Sports Network. Season tickets are still available beginning at $80 and can be purchased through the WKU ticket office, or at 1-800-5-BIG-RED.
