LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say a 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with the murder of 14-year-old Troyvonte Hurt.

LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley says the teen was arrested early Saturday morning.

Officials say the teen was also charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Hurt was killed on August 24 at Jacob and Clay Streets.

Lt. Todd Kessinger, head of LMPD's Homicide Unit, says the arrest was made based on video of the incident. Police say it started as a drive-by where people fired at others on the sidewalk. The people on the sidewalk then returned fire, according to police.

Officials say the shooting is believed to be gang-related.

According to Lt. Kessinger, the teen arrested and charged was on the sidewalk and knew the victim, when he fired back at the car as it drove by.

Troyvonte’s mother, Lanesha Harris, says the 16-year-old suspect was a friend who would never try to hurt her son.

“At the end of the day it has to go through the courts … I know justice will be served but it wasn't intentional," said Harris.

She attended a youth football game on August 27 honoring her son. Both teams paid tribute with a moment of silence before the game. Harris says Troyvonte would have been playing that night.

Police say the video could lead to more arrests in the case.

The courts will decide whether or not the shooting that killed the 14-year-old was accidental, according to Lt. Kessinger.
