LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Charles Young Park in the Portland Neighborhood is now Col. Charles D. Young Park.

The name change better commemorates the Kentucky native and African American military leader.

He was the third African American graduate of the U.S. Military  Academy at West Point and the highest ranking African American military officer in the U.S. during World War Two.

Community leaders hope this park will bring awareness to Col. Young's life.

"It's not about what nationality or what neighborhood or where they come from. It's about where they can go. Col. Charles Young showed us that point," John Taylor Jr. said.

The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
