LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say the gun involved in an accidental shooting in which a 12-year-old boy was shot and killed by his 11-year-old brother Sunday afternoon belonged to the boys' mother.

Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell confirmed the mother's ownership of the gun Monday afternoon.

According to LMPD Spokesperson Alicia Smiley, officers responded around 12:30 p.m. Sunday to a report -- initially -- of a self-inflicted shooting in the 3000 block of Penway Avenue.

Smiley says 12-year-old Tremain Brown, Jr. was found dead inside the home as the result of a gunshot.

After further investigation and family interviews, Smiley says it was revealed that the child had been shot by his 11-year-old brother.

"I didn't want to believe it. You never want to believe it," said one neighbor, who asked to conceal her identity. "I just hate it. It's sad for the mother and the family to see a child die like that."

That neighbor says Tremain was the oldest child.

"He was the oldest and he looked out for the other ones, his sister and brothers," that neighbor said. "He would be out playing with the kids and stuff. They'd come down and I'd give them candy, popsicles, all the time."

Community activist Christopher 2X tells WDRB that Brown was a student at Stuart Academy, where grief counselors have been brought in. 2X says Brown's family is planning a balloon release in front of their house on Penway Avenue to honor his memory.

LMPD's homicide unit is handling the investigation and working to determine how the juvenile obtained the weapon.
