LEXINGTON, KY. (WDRB) – This could get awkward.
On Saturday, Mark Stoops will again be on the same field with Shannon Dawson, the man he fired as his offensive coordinator at UK after just one season.
“We had as good a split as you can have,” said Stoops, who is set to begin his fourth season at UK. “He was a professional. He handled it the right way. I certainly tried to handle it the best I could.”
But a firing is still a firing, no matter how you spin it.
Dawson now has a shot at redemption as he returns to Commonwealth as the new offensive coordinator of Southern Miss.
“He’s a good football coach or I wouldn’t have hired him,” said Stoops. “You guys have seen our offense move at times and I’ve seen it move at times so he certainly can get you off balance, especially with some of the talent he has around him.”
To prepare for Dawson, Stoops said he not only studied game film of the Golden Eagles but also tape of his team from last year. It wasn’t easy. The air raid offense had potential, it just didn’t work out.
“It’s hard to see the near misses because we looked very good at times and moved the ball exceptionally at times,” said Stoops. “Sometimes you’re just fractions off.”
Stoops admits he and Dawson have not spoken since parting ways. He hopes to catch up with his old offensive coordinator over a beer.
That most likely won’t happen Saturday.
