LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Midea is known for making air conditioners, but workers braved the heat Tuesday for a big announcement.

The appliance manufacturer announced plans to create the Midea America Research Center in Louisville. City and company leaders broke ground Tuesday on the center. It's a $10 million investment that will create about 60 jobs in research that will lead to new products.

"It's places like this that an engineer who does a back-of-the-napkin sketch at the picnic table at the company picnic will actually turn it into a real product in the marketplace," said Jim Tomaszewski, President-Midea North America."

Midea is based in China and makes other appliances like fans, microwaves and refrigerators. Company leaders says the goal is to make Louisville the number one destination for engineering talent.
