LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four Walmart stores in the metro Louisville area have started a free grocery pickup service.

Store managers say it offers more convenient options for customers. "It's great for people who can't get out of their house, elderly, soccer moms, just basically everybody,” said Walmart grocery home shopping manager Jackie Kho. “Everybody's out of time."

The service allows customers to shop online and then drive to the store to pick up their groceries. On Walmart’s website, shoppers enter their zip code to find the nearest store offering the service, then fill their shopping carts.

"There are about 30,000 products that people are able to choose from on the website,” said Kho. “So if they’re looking for a specific thing, they can type it into the search menu."

Shoppers can build their cart and make the purchase in one day or build over time before finalizing the purchase. As long as you spend $30, the pickup service is free.

"Say you're buying spaghetti, there's a suggestion that will come up saying do you also need Parmesan cheese. So in that way, there are some impulse options available to customers,” explained Kho. “But we found lots of customers like it, because they can concentrate while they're building their basket.”

Meanwhile, personal shoppers will go through the store to check off your list. If something is out of stock, they will substitute the higher-end option for the product, as long as you authorize substitutions. The price you paid when you made your list will not change.

Walmart managers say online shoppers are purchasing more fresh food items and making bigger purchases than the average in-store shopper.

One mother shopping with her young daughter in the Middletown Walmart said the new service would be very convenient to use. "Shopping online would mean we would stick to the healthier items and less kids fighting and screaming in the aisles,” said Cassie Fertig, nodding to her daughter Mila. “It would be a quick game changer."

Pickup times run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. In order to pick your groceries up in a morning timeslot, you must submit your list by 1 a.m. If you want to pick your groceries up during the evening, you must submit your purchase by 10 a.m. A half-hour before your scheduled pickup time, a Walmart personal shopper will give you a courtesy call to see if you will still make it on time.

The pickup location is marked on the side of the buildings. There are phone numbers to call in each designated spot to alert the personal shoppers to bring your groceries out. If customers are not satisfied with any items, they can bring back the receipt for a full refund.

The online grocery service is available at the following stores:

  • 7101 Cedar Springs Blvd, Louisville, KY
  • 12981 Shelbyville Rd, Middletown, KY
  • 2910 Grant Line Rd, New Albany, IN
  • 1015 New Moody Lane, La Grange, KY

The Middletown Walmart is hiring two more personal shoppers to meet the growing demand for the service. The Walmart grocery chain intends to expand the service to more markets in the coming year.
