LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A vacant lot has been turned into a soccer field as part of ReSurfaced: The Liberty Build.

Crews are laying down grass at the corner of South Shelby and Liberty Streets in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood. City Collaborative says the field will be used for five-a-side games, tournaments and pick-up games.

Lincoln Elementary and Nativity Academy will also have the opportunity to use the space for gym classes during the day.

"They're thrilled to have a field that we'll be able to provide to them cost free on a regular basis," said Daniel Sanders with City Collaborative.

Louisville City FC will also be sponsoring a tournament during the first weekend.

The field opens Sept. 8, and officials hope to have the rest of the event space open by mid-September.
