State troopers keeping extra-close eye on drivers this holiday weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- State troopers across Kentuckiana are looking a little closer this holiday weekend.

They want to see if that person behind the wheel has glassy eyes or even slurred speech.

"It's getting close to the end of summer," said Sgt. Philip Hensley with Indiana State Police. "People want to squeeze in those last-minute barbecues and family get-togethers.

And the good times will flow at those gatherings. Anheuser-Busch says 98 million Americans will have at least one domestic beer this weekend. And at some point, you start walking a fine line between a leisure filled Labor Day weekend and having to deal with local law enforcement.

"We are focused on two things," Sgt. Hensley said. "Sober drivers and safe drivers."

State police in both Indiana and Kentucky confirmed that they will have checkpoints starting Friday night through Monday. Those check points will be set up at strategic points where they know that they will nab impaired drivers.

"We still are pulling so many drunk drivers off the roadways, and it's got to stop," Sgt. Hensley said.

Numbers from the National Safety Council show that 2016 is heading toward a dangerous path. Their research shows a 9 percent jump in traffic deaths across the nation during the first six months of this year, compared to last year.

The council added that trend could lead to the deadliest Labor Day on the road since 2008.

Police believe you can avoid becoming another statistic by always planning ahead. If you pick up the keys after a few cocktails, it's a risk that is just not worth the reward.

"We have zero tolerance for it," Sgt. Hensley said. "We are going to be out there looking for you. If we find you, we are going to take you to jail."
