ReSurfaced is a city program taking vacant lots and turning them into something useful. You can usually find food, music and art, but this year, there's soccer too.

“It was really weeded and kind of crazy, so they flattened it out,” said ReSurfaced volunteer and part-owner of Magbooth on Market Street, Peter Tower. “It's really exciting to see an unused piece of land come to life.”

The new field highlights the latest ReSurfaced project that has appeared in several downtown Louisville locations over the last 18 months.

“It's a small field only meant for 10 people to play at a time, and it's a really fast-paced game that we think will work really well in the smaller space and urban core of the city,” City Collaborative board member Daniel Sanders said.

Not only is the latest ReSurfaced plaza changing the landscape of the lot at the intersection of Liberty and Shelby streets in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood, but area businesses are hoping it changes the flow of foot traffic.

“A lot of people don't know we're here,” said Louisville Antique Market manager, Julie Reinstedler. “We do a lot of social media and stuff, but it's a lot of word of mouth. We have a great selection of dealers here at our antique mall, so [ReSurfaced] is going to be good for everybody.”

The part-owner of Magbooth on Market Street believes in the ReSurfaced philosophy so much that he volunteered his time to help build the field.

“It's just great to see more people out on the street," Tower said. "I think the climbing gym was a huge thing that wasn't a high-end restaurant or a high-end boutique. It's something that kids want to do, which I think was a great way to get more families down here."

The community space will be a place for businesses like Ramsi's Cafe on the World, Heine Brother's and Brown-Forman to sell food and drinks.

The field will be used for five-a-side games, tournaments and pickup games all year-round. The grand opening is on Thursday and events will run through the weekend.
