LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -

The largest allergy-friendly bakery in North America is opening in Jeffersonville, Ind.

Wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish and shellfish are the eight most common food allergies. Enjoy Life Foods, owned by Mondelez, is making snacks and pastries that are completely allergy-free.

“It's basically two children in a classroom who have severe food allergies,” said Joel Warady, Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer at Enjoy Life.

The number of children with allergies is growing each year. Today, one out of 13 children have food allergies. In two years, it will be an estimated one out of 10.

“We have over-hygiened a generation. So when you think about it, when kids come in from playing outside, we alcohol their hands, and we've broken down their immune system,” Warady said.

The growing allergy problem is why Enjoy Life Foods in Jeffersonville is making non-GMO snacks and pastries.

“We definitely have done something to our food chain. It might be pesticides, it might be processing foods,” Warady said.

Enjoy Life Foods bakes and packages allergy-friendly, gluten-free cookies, bars, seed and fruit mixes, lentil chips and baking mixes. The bakery ships the snacks all over the world.

“Jeffersonville, Indiana is now the food allergy capital of the world,” Warady said.

You can find the snacks at Kroger, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target and Amazon. The bakery and packaging facility has already hired 100 people and will hire 100 more by the end of next year. To apply for a job, click here.
