Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay Kicks Off

CORYDON, Ind. (WDRB) – The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay starts today in Corydon, Indiana's first state capital. The kick off event will be aired live on the Indiana Office of Tourism Development's Facebook page: 

The 3,200-mile journey through all 92 counties, starts at 10 a.m. at the Corydon Capitol State Historic site, and can be followed live through the custom mobile app where users will be able to get up-to-the-second information official Bicentennial Torch Relay torch.

The bicentennial torch is also equipped an HD camera and microprocessing unit, which will allow torchbearers to capture real-time images and video during their leg of the route. These images will be shared on the Torch Relay website and social media sites.

Torch Relay Facts

  • The relay was designed to inspire Hoosiers and promote unity across the state by connecting people, communities, and regions
  • 3,200 mile journey across the state traveling through 92 counties
  • Runs from September 9, 2016 to October 15, 2016
  • The torch will travel 6 days per week (Mondays rest day) for 5 weeks/32 days
  • Walkers, runners and torch bearers employing modes of transportation that are representative of Indiana culture and heritage will move the torch along its route
  • Torchbearers were chosen from nominations by each county in the state
  • The torch will be accompanied by a caravan that includes the Indiana Bicentennial Experience
  • The Torch Relay will conclude on the Statehouse Grounds with a grand celebration for all Hoosiers
