CRAWFORD | Louisville climbs to No. 10 in new AP football poll; FSU at No. 2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville football team, after an ACC-record 845-yard offensive performance in a 62-28 win at Syracuse, has climbed to No. 10 in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches’ polls in advance of Saturday’s matchup with Florida State.

The Seminoles climbed a spot to No. 2 in the nation, the same ranking they held when they beat Louisville 42-31 in their last visit to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in 2014. Those games represent the highest-ranked opponents to the stadium. West Virginia was rated No. 3 when Louisville took a 44-34 win in 2006.

FSU’s No. 2 ranking matches the highest rating for any Louisville opponent since it played host to No. 1-ranked Penn State in the 1997 season.

The Cards’ No. 10 ranking marks a return to the Top 10. It’s last Top 10 ranking was on Oct. 12, 2013. The Cards’ first ever Top 10 ranking in the AP poll was on Nov. 14, 2004. It’s current ranking marks the 26th time it has been in the Top 10 of the AP poll.

Saturday’s game figures to be one of the biggest in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium history, with Florida State visiting and ESPN’s College GameDay coming to Louisville for the game, which kicks off at noon. Information for fans wishing to attend the event has yet to be released.

Alabama held onto the No. 1 spot in the AP poll. Florida State, which garnered four first-place votes, supplanted Clemson at No. 2. Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson round out the top five, with future Louisville opponent Houston at No. 6. Louisville jumped over both Texas and Michigan State. Florida, which beat Kentucky 45-7 on Friday, moved into the poll at No. 23. See the full poll here.
