LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Hundreds gather in Louisville and surrounding areas to honor the victims of the terror attacks on September 11th.

“Today's event is the culmination of five years worth of work,” said Sam Young

Young is the Chairman of the Kentucky 9/11 Memorial Committee. On Sunday, the memorial that has been worked on for years was officially dedicated in Radcliff.

“I was in law enforcement at the time so watching it that day, it was a shock,” said a woman in attendance of the dedication ceremony. “I actually stood still in my living room. I couldn't believe it was happening.”

That was the sentiment of many.

“I remember sitting in the office at a meeting,” another person said. “One of the girls came in and said a plane had hit the World Trade Center.”

The steel beam used in the memorial statue at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery is from the World Trade Center itself, the stone came from the Pentagon.

“Actually to be here in person, to bring my kids to see what happened in America so many years ago. It touches their lives,” one person said about the memorial.

Meanwhile, in Louisville there was a special first responder recognition and appreciation service at Middletown United Methodist church.

“It’s important to remember so that we don't repeat the mistakes of our past,” said senior pastor Thomas Smith. “To remember the time that we were brought together in unity, that we were one people.”

At the service a presentation of proceeds from Saturday’s Remembrance ride was presented to Supporting Heroes.
