Pres. George W. Bush to campaign for U.S. Senate candidate Todd Young in Indiana

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Former President George W. Bush will be in Indiana to boost U.S. Senate candidate Todd Young, who became an unexpected underdog after Evan Bayh belatedly joined the race.

Bush will headline two fundraisers on Monday that are being held in Indianapolis and Elkhart. Young is trying to close a large money advantage held by Bayh, who has nearly $9.5 million in his campaign account.

The Democratic former Indiana governor and U.S. senator entered the race in July after former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill dropped out.

Bush has kept a low profile since leaving office in 2009. The receptions will raise money for Young's general election account, the Indiana Republican Party and a political action committee that supports Young.

Young's campaign had about $1.2 million at the end of June.
