LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Back to school means big bucks for teachers, but a Western Middle School educator won't have to worry about money this year.

Meredith Waterworth was surprised Wednesday morning with an assembly to recognize her work and to award her with a $490 gift card from Walmart.

That's the average amount teachers spend of their own money for their classrooms each year.

Waterworth is a new math teacher  who found out first hand this year how expensive setting up a classroom can be.

"The fact that they're willing to go the extra step and make a way for teachers to get what they need, to help students learn, is a great thing," she said.

Walmart is asking for nominees to award other outstanding teachers from across the country.
