Homeland Security training prepares Indiana responders for every scenario

Posted: Updated:

NORTH VERNON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Indiana's Department of Homeland Security gave WDRB a behind the scenes look at some scenarios that hopefully none of us will ever have to face.

The Muscatatuck Urban Training Center is a land built around controlled chaos. This week marks training week at the center. You name the agency and they showed up. Everyone from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to Indiana State Police, as well as a host of additional agencies.

Crews are kept on their toes as we watched them go around to different simulated emergencies. A natural disaster, an active shooter inside a school and then to a domestic dispute that spilled outside. All scenarios that were fair game.

The mixed bag of melee that responders face may seem like a lot to learn in little time, but it's a set of skills that when reality hits they are prepared to punch the clock under dire circumstances.

"It's probably going to be some of the most invaluable training that we do," said Shannan Hinton with Bartholomew County Emergency Management.
