Louisville notches three more homicides overnight after two apparent home invasions

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three  people were killed overnight after two apparent home invasions less than two hours apart.

Neighbors along Esplanade Avenue say the thought of a random break-in in their neighborhood is concerning. In this case, police say the homeowner shot the intruder around 2:30 a.m.

The intruder apparently broke down a door to get inside.

One person who did not want to be identified told us she heard her dog barking at someone walking around the outside of her neighbor's home. Then she heard gunshots. When officers got to the scene, they found one man dead inside.

"At this point, it appears to have been some type of burglary attempt," said LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell. "We're still investigating that aspect of it."

Less than two hours before that incident, police say someone broke into another home on Nancy Lane in Pleasure Ridge Park. When officers arrived, they found two men dead inside a home. Right now investigators say they believe both victims lived there. They think this was a home invasion, as well, but police are still working to confirm details.

"It is believed to be at this point that both were residents of the home," Mitchell said. "Even though it came out as a home invasion, we haven't been able to substantiate that yet. We don't know if anything is been stolen or anything like that, but that appears that's how it was reported to us."

Police have not said whether any arrests have been made, or if they think the break-ins are connected.
