16-year old charged in 2 sexual assaults near U of L campus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Charges have been filed in connection with two sexual assaults near the University of Louisville campus.

Police have arrested a 16-year old in connection with both cases, but because he is a juvenile, we cannot release his name.

"It was just kind of shocking," said U of L junior Allie Lambert.

Lambert, like a lot of students, is pretty disturbed about the recent sexual assaults and robberies near campus.

"It was startling, because it was the first time that I had ever heard of anything like this happening here," she said.

Last week, police say a woman was carjacked at gunpoint then sexually assaulted near 3rd Street and Gaulbert Avenue. A day later, a U of L student was reportedly pulled inside a car and sexually assaulted at 7th and Shipp Streets. The suspects also took her car and set it on fire.

"The fact that it got like really close to home ... that's just kind of startling," Lambert said.

On Friday, LMPD arrested the 16-year old male in connection with the assaults. Police say the teenager was already in custody at JCYC on unrelated charges when he was arrested.

"We were notified [Monday] that an arrest had been made," said Lt. Col Kenny Brown with U of L Police.

Despite the arrest, the attacks have put both students and campus police on high alert. U of L police have also increased patrol the areas near the attacks.

Campus police also want to remind students to use the shuttle service.

"Maybe they're studying at one of the buildings, and they want to come back to their dorms, and it has gotten late, and they don't feel right walking by themselves ... then we encourage them to call," Lt. Col. Brown said.

Lambert said she has noticed the extra patrol on campus and already feels safer.

"I see them walking around," she said. "They patrol often, and I like that they make sure that we're safe.

"I can definitely say I will sleep better."

LMPD says there could be at least one more arrest in connection with these assaults.
