LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local high school and middle school basketball coach has resigned after being indicted for sex abuse involving a female student.
LaRue County Schools released a statement saying that Kelton Ford, also known as Simon Ford, resigned as girls basketball coach and from his duties with the school. The superintendent says the school received information about alleged inappropriate conduct by Ford that involved "inappropriate touching" with a female student athlete.
Ford, 48, was indicted on sexual abuse first degree on Monday. The LaRue County Public School superintendent, Sam Sanders, wrote in an email to WDRB that a parent told the LaRue County Middle School principal on September 7 after basketball practice of the allegations. Sanders said the next day, Ford was suspended with pay as the district investigated and informed Kentucky State Police.
A man who lives in Hodgenville told WDRB he was pleased the district acted quickly when leaders learned of the allegations.
"They should take it seriously, very seriously," said Jonathan Underwood. "It's shocking and it's something that should be taken seriously."
Ford's letter of resignation, sent by his attorney, was received by the superintendent on Monday. Sanders said he accepted the resignation and Ford will receive a percentage of his salary he already worked.
Ford was the middle school girls basketball coach, the high school varsity girls basketball coach, and the In School Suspension Coordinator.
People who live in Hodgenville told WDRB the allegations are shocking.
"You never did hear anything like this before," said Anthony Douglas. "Because it always seemed like everybody knew everybody."
A graduate of LaRue County High School said she knew of Ford when she went to school there and was surprised when she heard about the indictment. "You don't hear about things like that happening here at all," said Kellie Louthan. "It's the first, I think, the first that something's ever happened like that."
In Ford's place, Sanders said Danielle Brown has been named the interim middle school coach. And the varsity interim coach will be named later this week.
A spokesperson with KSP told WDRB the investigation remains open.
