Floyd County figuring out how to spend millions from hospital sale

Posted: Updated:

FLOYD COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- More than $75 million will be coming to Floyd County following the sale of Floyd Memorial Hospital to Baptist Health.

County commissioners have already approved $15 million in spending over the next three years. The money will be held by the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.

"We're trying to handle it in the most efficient way in what's best for the taxpayer in Floyd County and what's best for Floyd County," said Stephen Bush, president of the county commission.

Some of the money will pay off the deficit, repair the jail and fix roads.

In October, the county will spend $5 million of the money. The $1.5 million deficit will be paid off, along with an additional $500,000 to cover election equipment. $2 million will go to a park project, and $1 million will go to road projects and new trucks.

$6 million will be distributed in January. The jail will receive $4 million for renovations and $1.4 million will go to the highway department. The sheriff’s department will also get $400,000 for cars and equipment. An additional $200,000 will go to park improvements.

$2 million will be distributed for similar projects in both January of 2018 and January of 2019.

Commissioners have also discussed possible pay raises for county workers.

"There's been talks from $5,000 up to $7,000, or even a little bit more," Bush said. "So it ranges right now, and we're still going to be discussing it."

They want to finalize a spending plan before the hospital sale is final at the end of the month. The county will also get an additional $5.6 million for the next 10 years as part of the sale.
