One of this year’s biggest local news stories is the amazing start to the season by the University of Louisville football team. With Coach Bobby Petrino and top Heisman trophy candidate Lamar Jackson leading the way, the Cardinals have been impossible for the national press to ignore. And for evidence, look no further than ESPN’s “Gameday” program at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium last Saturday, and Jackson’s appearance on the front cover of Sports Illustrated this week.
Since coming to U of L, Athletic Director Tom Jurich aimed for nothing less than excellence in every aspect of the school’s athletic program. And his non-stop effort, shrewd decisions and smart investment have produced undeniable results.
Membership in the ACC. A top three national football ranking. Multiple Final Fours and College World Series appearances in basketball and baseball.
Such overall quality was unthinkable 18 years ago. But Jurich has shown what can be accomplished with a person of real vision at the helm.
I wouldn’t buy any non-refundable tickets for the title game just yet. But it’s now clear that when former Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger famously said that “the University of Louisville is on a collision course with the National Championship – the only variable is time,” he wasn’t kidding.
And maybe -- just maybe -- the time has finally come.
I’m Bill Lamb, and that’s my Point of View.
