Indiana teen accused of trying to join ISIS faces federal judge

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WDRB) -- An Indiana teen accused of trying to join ISIS faces a federal judge for the first time.

18-year-old Akram Musleh was arrested in June and is charged with trying to provide support to a known terrorist group.

The Brownsburg teenager was in court Friday.

Musleh's attorney says the teen was influenced by social media and the government should be trying to help him, not put him in jail.

"I think prosecuting people instead of getting them help with countering violent extremism is a better alternative, instead we have a client in isolation in Kentucky getting no help whatsoever," Thomas Durkin, said.

The FBI says Musleh actively tried to join ISIS, including buying plane tickets and chatting with suspected extremists online.
