SALEM, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Salem, Ind., church has been destroyed by fire.

The fire happened at Highland Baptist, according to Salem Fire Department Chief Tom Day.

"Its sadness, extreme sadness, not just for me but for the members who have been here for 50 or 60 years," pastor Justin Ackeret said.

A call about the fire was received Monday at 3:20 a.m.

"We're not dead," Ackeret said. "This isn't the end. It's another chapter, and we look at it as a new beginning."

Ackeret said the church does have a small savings fund and hopes to receive some money from it's insurance company. The plan is to rebuild, but for now, the congregation of 20-25 people will meet in a member's basement.

Firefighters were at the scene until around 10 a.m. Day says there is no way to determine what caused the fire.

"We'll make new memories, but we'll still have the ones in our heart, and we won't never ever forget them," said church member Lori Coats.

No one was injured.
