Kentucky's smoking rate among kids sees sharp decline

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- State health officials say they are making progress in reducing the number of Kentucky kids who smoke.

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services says the latest smoking rate among high school students is 16.9 percent -- that's down from 26.2 percent a decade ago.

Public health officials attribute the state's decade-long decline, in part, to tobacco-free school policies. However, the CDC says Kentucky's rate is still the third highest in the country.
