LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One lane the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge opened on Friday and three more lanes of traffic are scheduled to open on Monday, October 10th. That's the word from representatives of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

When that happens, two lanes will carry through traffic to I-65 South. A third lane will carry traffic to I-64 East, I-64 West and I-71 North.

Extensive improvements to the bridge are nearly complete.

On Thursday, Kentucky Transportation Secretary Greg Thomas helped give Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin and Indiana Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb a tour of the improved Kennedy Bridge.

Lt. Holcomb was quick to point out that the Kennedy isn't the only bridge that's on schedule.

"Pretty soon, we're going to be using the east end bridge as well, like (Gov. Bevin) said," Lt. Gov. Holcomb said. "It's on time, on budget and it is not just going to be good for business, as he said, it's going to be good for families."

The bridge fully closed to traffic in January to allow for extensive improvements, including a new floor system.
