State auditor says funds meant to support police being bled away by improper spending

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A state auditor says excessive and unnecessary spending is improperly bleeding away money meant to help increase police officer pay in Kentucky.

Auditor Mike Harmon says an audit was done of the Department of Criminal Justice Training and the public fund that supports it. The fund is used to pay police officers more if they complete certain training each year.

Several lawmakers questioned why money from the program was being used for other things.

"I think it's just the tip of the iceberg in the lack of transparency," said Rep. Denny Butler, (R) District 38. "When I requested the audit, I was denied at every turn until I spoke with Auditor Harmon."

An ethics commission will now look at the audit and decide whether there needs to be further investigation.

In a response, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary blames the prior administration.
