Louder Than Life ready to rock, despite noise and traffic concerns

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's the festival that gives rockers the metal they crave.

Slipknot, Avenge Sevenfold, even Cheap Trick will take over Champions Park this weekend for Louder Than Life.

Sounds checks and set up wrapped up Friday, and over 50,000 expected this year. In 2015, the festival made a $12.8 million economic impact.

"Hotels are popping, taxes are good, parking, food. Even when we come up, we hire local labor," explained organizer Clay Busch.

But not everyone in the city loves it. Long time River Road residents Tony and Judy Kerger say the noise is noticeable.

"When you're sitting down, you're thinking what was that? I know it wasn't Thunder with that rhythm," Tony Kerger said.

The traffic snarls, they say, also aren't ideal.

"You try to get out to go church, and they won't let you go downtown," Judy Kerger said. "You have to work your way around the area."

Busch tells WDRB the festival is still a work in progress.

"We are constantly looking at new technologies, working with our sound companies, working with the tour managers and the sound guys for each band to kind of work to see how we can not be a nuisance," Busch said.

He adds they're in contact with the city too about how to make the traffic flow smoother.

"Rock n' Roll is about community, and we're all here to grow and create a positive atmosphere for everyone," Busch said.

The Kergers admit the sound part has gotten better over the years, and they hope traffic follows suit. Because they know people wait all year to rock out at one of the city's newest festivals.

Gates open Saturday at 11 a.m. at Champions Park.
