Old Louisville named top 5 great neighborhood in America

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Old Louisville is named one of five great neighborhoods in America.

The American Planning Association's (APA) Great Places in America program recognizes streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces in the United States demonstrating exceptional character, quality, and planning-attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth.

“Old Louisville has long been one of the great jewels in America. We boast the largest contiguous collection of Victorian mansions in the country, but more than that it is a stellar example of urban planning,” said Louisville Metro Councilman David James. “Our walking courts and streetscapes that blend parks, gardens, and homes is a conscious effort to create livability. Old Louisville is also known for its strong identification with the arts through the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, the St. James Court Art Show, the Garvin Gate Blues Festival, Jazz in Central Park, the Old Louisville LIVE concerts, and SpringFest. All of these elements are an important part of who we are in this community, a neighborhood with character and a sense of place."

In addition to Old Louisville, APA also recognized the following neighborhoods this year:

  •     Downtown Santa Ana - Santa Ana, California
  •     Midtown Atlanta -Atlanta, Georgia
  •     Nob Hill -Albuquerque, New Mexico
  •     Downtown Warren - Warren, Rhode Island

Old Louisville is approximately 1,200 acres immediately south of the central business district. Its are from Broadway to the North, Cardinal Boulevard to the South, 9th Street to the West, and I-65 to the East.
