Public Defender's office claims hundreds of Louisville inmates being held unlawfully

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of Louisville inmates are being held unlawfully, according to the Public Defender's office -- and representatives went before a judge to argue that assertion Monday morning.

The hearing, which is still ongoing, included some heated moments between representatives of the County Attorney's Office and the Public Defender's office.

The Public Defender's office is accusing Jefferson District Court judges of violating state law when setting bond for hundreds of defendants. They claim judges are ignoring a law that provides inmates with bail credit for minor offenses -- and they claim they're not taking into consideration a person's ability to pay bond.
