Tow truck driver hit and killed on Dixie Highway near West Point
LMPD says the driver was traveling south on Dixie Highway when he or she hit a tow truck driver on the side of the road.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A tow truck driver was killed Monday night in the 16600 block of Dixie Highway near Dixie Beach Road.
LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell says around 10 p.m. the driver of a van was traveling south on Dixie Highway when he sideswiped a tow truck driver who was loading a vehicle onto a wrecker.
The tow truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner's office has not released the victim's name, but a manager at Scalf's Auto Repair & Towing in Brandenburg, says the victim was one of its drivers.
The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver of the van. Mitchell says several factors could have contributed to the crash.
"It is extremely dark on Dixie Highway in certain parts and particularly in this area," Mitchell said. "It’s still very early to know exactly what the definitive reason was, but I can tell you that obviously the poor lighting would be one of the factors but I don’t know if that’s the single one.”
Mitchell said there was a person with the tow truck driver when he was hit. Police have interviewed that witness and are still trying to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash.
The road near the crash was closed for several hours overnight, but reopened early Tuesday morning.
