Family and friends remember Louisville teenager shot and killed at party

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With dozens of balloons in hand, a crowd of Nate McNealy's closest friends and family gathered at Berrytown Park on Monday night.

"To think he touched that many lives in just 18 years is phenomenal," said Jennifer Russell, McNealy's mother.

The park was a popular hangout for McNealy.

"These kids came out, and they brought out this little poster board, and it had rest in peace and all this stuff, and they had us sign it," Russell said. "Like, he touched a lot of kids' hearts especially. These kids loved him out here."

Known as "Ben-Ben" or "Benji," the 18-year-old had dreams of attending the University Of Kentucky to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

He was about a mile from that campus Saturday morning, when Lexington Police say there was a fight. McNealy was shot several times, and he later died at UK Hospital.

"It just makes me happy that I know that he's in a better place, and he's not in this dangerous world no more," said Mariah Dix, McNealy's sister.

Hit with countless stories about McNealy, his family says, they've learned so much about him. And it's those stories that have helped them get by.

"It's been real encouraging for me, because I'm telling you, there's some moments when I don't know how I'm gonna take my next breath," Russell said,

"He touched a lot of people's hearts," said Jennifer Baptiste, McNealy's girlfriend. "That's just how he was."

No one has been charged in the case.
