Louisville's health department receives national accreditation

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's health department scores much more than a good checkup.

It just received national accreditation.

City leaders say the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health met some demanding requirements, including reviews from its peers. Accreditation shows the city is working to protect and improve its health.

It's a distinction that puts Louisville in the company of about 150 other health departments across the country. "This puts our department among the top 5 percent of all health departments in the nation, so just one in 20 have this designation. That's a big deal," said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.

Mayor Fischer says the department's work to reduce smoking and programs to fight the Zika virus helped make the department stand out.
