Hardin County Sheriff's Office looking for people who encountered suspected officer impersonator

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) - The Hardin County Sheriff's Office wants to know if you've encountered a man suspected of pretending to be a cop.

Brian Palmersheim was arrested last week for impersonating a police officer. Investigators say the 42-year-old was driving a white Chevy Tahoe with flashing red and blue lights, a siren and a camera on the dash. According to an arrest report, a deputy saw Palmersheim using the flashing lights in the Elizabethtown area.

"We're getting a lot of people saying, 'He's done this and he's done that,'" said Hardin County Chief Deputy David Lee.

Lee says the Hardin County Sheriff's Office is now trying track down people who recognize Palmersheim or his vehicle. He says deputies are looking into reports that he's been flashing lights at drivers and that he even pulled someone over.

"This has been happening for quite a while now," said Kristin, who asked WDRB not to use her last name.

She says she used to live in Hardin County and that she remembers seeing the vehicle on I-65 a couple years ago with the lights on.

"After the first couple times, I thought it was a cop. So I'd either slow down or move over," Kristin said. "After a while, I kind of got suspicious."

Authorities say Palmersheim told the deputy who stopped him that he's a retired officer but that was a lie. We're told he was also carrying a weapon and had more at home.

"I think over 40 weapons were taken as part of the search warrant and some other police-related items," Lee said.

Officials are relieved his SUV is off the streets.

"You've got somebody out there representing himself as a law enforcement agency, taking police action and he's not," Lee said.

As for a motive, investigators say that's still not clear.

Anyone with information can contact the sheriff's office at 270-765-5133.
