Sister-in-law of tow truck driver killed on Dixie Highway: 'Slow down and move over'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A desire to help is what family members say led Steve Simpson to a career as a tow truck driver.

“If you needed something, he was there. Didn’t matter what time of day,” said Simpson's sister-in-law, Angela Sweazy. “He just liked people in general and towing people out of a jam.”

A father of three, the Meade County man worked for years alongside his brother at Scalf’s Auto Repair and Towing.

The 42-year-old was loading a vehicle onto a wrecker Monday night along Dixie Highway just north of West Point.

According to LMPD, a van sideswiped Simpson. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He’s not coming home," Sweazy said. "We love him, and we are not getting him back."

Aware of the dangers of his job, Antonio Zambrano with Kentuckiana Towing says Simpson’s death serves as a wake-up call.

“When they see us, they see a tow truck. But I mean, we are people just like everyone else, and we’re trying to make a living,” Zambrano said.

According to AAA, Kentucky and Indiana law requires drivers "approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights," including tow trucks "traveling the same direction to vacate the lane closest if safe and possible."

The law in Kentucky says the alternative is to, "slow to a speed safe for road, weather, and traffic conditions," while Indiana’s law says, "reduce speed at least 10 mph below the speed limit."

"Slow down, and move over. It goes for tow truck drivers as well,” Sweazy said. “He would want everyone to do the same thing. Slow down and move over."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Simpson’s family with funeral expenses.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hager’s Funeral Home in Brandenburg.

Simpson's funeral will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday.

LMPD's Traffic Unit is investigating the incident that killed Simpson.
